Post Show Discussion
Tonight saw the writer, director and cast all undergo the trial-by-fire that is the Post-Show Discussion. For the uninitiated, this is an opportunity for the audience to see, meet and question the creative team behind a show.It can be an informative, probing and lively interaction between theatre professionals and the people who pay to see the fruits of the labour. Or, alternatively, it can be a conversational car crash that makes you want to crawl under the seat and wonder that last year's family Christmas Day meal where crazy Auntie Barbra made an inappropriate sexual advance to you wasn't so bad really.
Luckily, this was an easy going and informative one with Philip and Jules talking about the development process of the play and the actors talking about how they relate to new writing and the relatively short rehearsal period (five weeks versus twelve weeks in most European theatres).
Highlight was actor John Kazak's frank reaction to Jules' revelation about the development of online and proxy marriages (his eyes become wider and wider, suddenly blurts out "F*** off!" in disbelief). She assured him of its truth with the fantastic story of a cosmonaut who recently married his earthly bride whilst he was still in orbit. She also then began to ponder the legality of these marriages - apparently they're legally good in Texas and New Mexico - and what would happen in a 'virtual' divorce.
Philip suggested that this would be a good time to retire to the bar. The secret is definitley knowing when to stop...
Gorgeous Avatar continues at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, until Sat 20 May 2006. There will also be a post-show discussion following the performance at Theatre Royal, Dumfries on Mon 29 May 2006.
